Although the first presidential debate doesn’t take place until 9 p.m. Eastern Time tonight, one ad, which ran in the Wall Street Journal this morning, declared prematurely that Senator John McCain is the winner.

“McCain Wins Debate!” reads the ad, which features a headshot of a smiling McCain with an American flag in the background.

Another ad spotted by an astute reader featured a quote from McCain campaign manager Rick Davis declaring “McCain won the debate -- hands down.”

The debate will be held at 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

The subject of tonight’s debate was to be foreign policy, but questions about the economy are expected. The moderator will be Jim Lehrer of PBS.

McCain decided this morning to meet Democrat Barack Obama for the debate, reversing his decision two days ago to suspend his campaign while lawmakers negotiated a proposed $700 billion-dollar bailout of US financial markets.
