McMillen Jacobs Associates' has a career launching opportunity for a recent structural or geotechnical engineering graduate based in Cleveland, OH, Columbus, OH, or Pittsburgh, PA, with the desire to learn how to design tunnels, shafts, foundations, buried structures, and other related underground infrastructure. We are seeking candidates ranging from entry level up to two years of experience in civil infrastructure or vertical construction. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the design of the challenging heavy-civil projects located in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and across the world! Additionally, this position offers a great opportunity for a motivated, detail oriented, team-centric Engineer to work on anything from small, local jobs to large scale transit, rail, highway, water, and wastewater jobs with construction cost routinely in the $100 - $300 million range.
Prepare the structural design calculations for tunnels, shafts, foundations, temporary excavation support systems, and other types of underground structures.
Review contractor submittals on existing tunnel and infrastructure projects
Coordinate with other civil, structural, geotechnical, and hydraulics engineers in solving highly multi-disciplinary design problems.
Write design calculation reports, technical memoranda, and other documents to support technical analysis and design decision making.
Direct the Design Technology Specialists and other members of the drawing production team on the proper depiction of designs in plan, section, and detail.
Participate in the QA\/QC process for all completed design work prior to submittal to the client
Occasionally visit job sites, carry out local field assignments, or travel for short term field work.
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (curriculum emphasis in structural or geotechnical engineering) from an accredited school.
Desire to play a multi-disciplinary role in the detailed design of large scale infrastructure.
Direct job experience or relevant coursework in structural analysis, solid mechanics, finite element analysis, reinforced concrete design and detailing, steel design and detailing, geotechnical engineering, foundations, and surveying.
Familiarity with the latest versions of structural design standards, including ACI-318, ASCE-7, and AISC 360.\u00a0
EIT certification or ability and intent to earn within 6 months of hiring.
Ability to work in a team environment to analyze problems and develop engineering solutions.
Strong oral and written communication skills
Familiarity with some of the industry standard drafting and BIM software packages, including Autodesk suite (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and REVIT), Bentley Microstation, and Solidworks, and the production of structural details, drawings, and plans
An ideal candidate will meet all of the minimum requirements, plus some or all of the following:\u00a0
Masters degree in structural or geotechnical engineering, or, two years of practical design experience, especially with underground structures, earth retention structures, or foundations.
Eligibility and intent to obtain Professional Engineer licensure (Civil PE) within 4 years of hire
Strong experience using structural design analysis software (ie. SAP2000, STAAD Pro, Risa, Strand6, RAM Structural system, SP Column, etc...) or geotechnical design analysis software (CT Shoring, LPile, Wallap, Plaxis, FLAC, DeepEx, etc...)
Experience with specialized design standards, including AASHTO LRFD Bridge Provisions, ACI 350 Code Requirements for Environmental Structures, NDS for Wood Construction, ACI 530 Masonry Specifications.
Experience with industry and foundation design manuals and standards, including NAVFAC DM-7 and FHWA geotechnical design publications.
Applied experience in surveying, GIS technologies and data processing (ArcGIS, QGIS, Grass, etc...), and site civil design (including grading, utility design, and stormwater management). Experience with soil-structure interaction problems
Experience or coursework in Precast and\/or Pre-stressed and Post-tensioned concrete design
Experience or coursework in structural dynamics and seismic design
Experience or coursework in concrete durability and design life prediction
