Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Production of Contract Documents for construction of structures, including plans and specifications

Conducts on-site investigations and evaluations of existing structures, including the preparation of reports

Works with other project team members to understand and integrate their requirements into the structural design

Coordinates details of design between various project design disciplines

Assists and coaches CADD technicians in developing presentations of structural designs

Uses and enforces use of company and client standards on project work

Prepares and reviews opinions of construction costs for structural portion of projects

Determines required effort and prepares estimates for cost and schedule of structural engineering services for design and construction

Plans, monitors and manages structural engineering scope, schedule and budget for successful project completion

Performs quality management reviews of structural designs by others and works with designer to understand and resolve issues arising from the review

Assists field staff in resolving issues and questions during construction

Assists in continuing development and improvement of structural design standards, specifications, and typical details

Develops project-specific designs, standards, specifications and details for unusual or unique situations

Prioritizes and balances competing project demands and conflicting project requirements

Identifies and consults with others on solutions to unusual, difficult, or complex tasks

Effectively participates in client contacts and business development efforts

Identifies alternatives, evaluates each, and determines appropriate actions to move forward

Makes solid and implementable decisions in a timely manner

Reduces complex aspects of structural engineering to terms understandable to others

Attends to details in preparation or review of calculations, drawings, and specifications

Plans and monitors work so that broad tasks and specific details are followed through to completion

Monitors scope, schedule, and budget and controls the work to the project plan

Understands, implements, and enforces company and client technical standards on projects

Travel required when requested

Makes site visits to observe during construction and operation

Required Skills

Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of specifications for construction using concrete, masonry and steel

Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of presentation of structural design and detailing in construction documents

Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Structural design codes and standards including:

International Building Code (including seismic design and detailing provisions)

Design Loads: ASCE 7

Concrete: ACI 318, ACI 350 series

Masonry: ACI 530

Steel: AISC Steel Construction Manual - 13th Edition; AISC Seismic Design Manual

Extensive knowledge of:

Geotechnical and soil conditions including effects of seismicity and groundwater

Foundation design and construction (deep and shallow)

Analysis and design of circular and rectangular plate-type structures

Computer structural analysis and design programs (STAAD preferred)

Basic knowledge of:

Contract Document requirements for bidding and procurement

Contract Document general requirements

Architectural design and detailing issues

Requirements and design approach of other project disciplines (civil, process mechanical, HVA, plumbing, electrical)

Project budgeting and project management

Proficient in determining pipe thrusts and designing structures to resist thrust loads

Expert in the application of building codes and code-referenced standards for design of water treatment and industrial structures in concrete, steel, and reinforced masonry

Highly motivated self-starter with have demonstrated experience working with minimum supervision to determine and complete structural engineering tasks while acting as part of a multi-disciplinary project team

Skills in organizing and coordinating work with both peers and subordinates, and in planning, monitoring, and completing projects within that plan

Understands projects at the conceptual level, and develops corresponding structural engineering scope of work, budget and schedule

Ability to work independently to effectively complete routine or moderately complex tasks

Ability to simultaneously think beyond past approaches and propose practical approaches to structural design and construction

Listens and understands the concerns and needs of other project team members

Communicate clearly and concisely in speech, writing, and contract documents

Presents communications in an organized fashion and with appropriate level of detail

Positively influences both peers and subordinates to move toward overall project goals

Actively looks ahead to plan for and respond to project challenges

Seeks long term benefits to the overall project when determining structural design approach

Aware of the business of structural engineering as well as the technical design issues

Strong oral and written communications skills

Proficient in public speaking roles

Proficient in MS Word, Access, and Excel

Required Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with Structural Emphasis

Minimum of 10 years experience in the design of structures

Minimum of 6 years experience in design of structures for water and wastewater treatment and storage

Registration as a Professional or Structural Engineer

Production and project management skills and experience

Preferred Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Structural Engineering

Experience with Microstation or Autocad
